Short Bio

Melissa-Kay Grey, an avid performer and teacher of Jamaican heritage, provides private lessons in Ann Arbor, Michigan, for flutists in the Saline, Ann Arbor, Ypsilanti, and Brighton districts. As of 2022, she serves as co-director of the University of Michigan SMTD Engagement and Outreach Musicianship program and President of the West Michigan Flute Association. Melissa earned her Master of Music degree in Flute Performance from the University of Tennessee and Bachelor’s degree from Winthrop University.

As an active musician, Melissa has performed with large ensembles including Opera MODO, Arbor Opera, Andrews University Symphony Orchestra, and Dexter Orchestra. She has worked with smaller ensembles including Great Lakes Flutes, Iridescent Flutes, Michigan Flute Orchestra, and enjoys giving recitals and concert series with Dr. Aleksandra Vöjcîc and Dr. Naki Kripfgans. She expands her classical background in a multitude of areas and has worked with notable artists such as singer, Camille Aragones, violinist, Jaime Jorge, and singer Omar Aragones of One Freq.

An advocate of contemporary music, she has commissioned, recorded and performed works for solo flute, and chamber ensembles. She has worked with notable composers such as Michael Daugherty, Peter Ashbourne, Carmen Marulanda, Kelly Vie, Frederick Isaac, and Les Watson.

Melissa maintains a career as a performer and educator, having performed and presented masterclasses throughout the country including MIchigan, Florida, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, as well as Internationally. She has performed at the National Flute Association, Florida Flute Association, Mid Atlantic Flute Convention, and Hampton Roads Flute Faire.

In 2013, she co-founded and is the current Artistic Director of the Interactive Flute Retreat. Previously she directed the Carolina Flute Camp, and thoroughly enjoys creating multiple flute related events throughout the year. In 2019, created Seven Pillars non profit music education organization dedicated to cultivating relationships in the United States and Internationally through collaborations, and educational outreach programs
